Refugee Protection
Canada has a
well-established system for individuals seeking refugee protection (asylum). If
you are a foreigner in Canada or at a Canadian port of entry and fear for your
safety if you return to your home country, you may be able to claim refugee
status.
Who Can Claim
Refugee Status?
In Canada, you
can seek protection if you meet the definition of a:
- Convention Refugee: This applies if you are
outside your home country and have a well-founded fear of persecution
based on your race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or
membership in a particular social group.
- Person in Need of Protection: This applies if you
would face a danger of torture, a risk to your life, or a risk of cruel
and unusual treatment or punishment if you were to return to your home
country.
