Visitor Visa
Canada is a
popular tourist destination, offering everything from vibrant cities to
breathtaking natural landscapes. For foreigners planning a visit, understanding
the entry requirements is crucial.
Do you need a
visa or an eTA?
- Electronic Travel Authorization
(eTA):
If you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country you will likely need an eTA
to fly to, or transit through, a Canadian airport. An eTA is an electronic
document linked to your passport, and is valid for up to five years or
until your passport expires.
- Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident
Visa - TRV):
If you are a citizen of a visa-required country, you will need a visitor
visa to enter Canada. This is a sticker placed in your passport. You
typically apply for this online or through a visa application centre in
your home country. Visitor visas usually allow stays of up to six months,
though a border services officer can grant a shorter or longer period upon
arrival. Processing times can vary significantly, so apply well in
advance.
General
Requirements for Visitors:
Regardless of
whether you need an eTA or a visa, all visitors to Canada generally need to:
- Have a valid passport or equivalent
travel document.
- Be in good health and have no
criminal or immigration-related convictions.
- Convince a border services officer
that you have ties to your home country (e.g., a job, home, family,
financial assets) that will ensure your return.
- Convince the officer that you will
leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.
- Have enough money for your stay.
The amount needed can vary based on the length of your visit and whether
you're staying in a hotel or with friends/relatives.
- You may also be asked to show a
return or onward ticket.
